Garden Talks – May and June

The weather this spring/summer is still very mixed, with regular night frost warnings. The warmer season seems to be very slow in coming this year! Due to these regular warnings of night frost, we are kept busy with moving seedlings and small plants indoors in the evenings, as it would be so easy for them to be destroyed by night-frost after all that care and attention; for members without greenhouses, seedlings have been slower to flourish than last year as the temperature continues to below.
It’s good that life is slowly getting back to a more normal pace as museums, non-essential shops etc. are opening and meeting with vaccinated friends has opened created a new energy. Life is slowly a bit more normal and garden visits may be an option soon!

Our last two Zoom talks before the summer will take place in May and June.

May:
May 27th 2021 at 8.00 pm  – Troy Scott Smith – Sissinghurst, with a brief introduction to the Courts Garden (see details of talk below)
June:
June 24th 2021 at 8.00 pm – Sean O’Gaoithin – Glenveagh Castle Gardens
The speaker for this month’s Zoom talk is Troy Scott Smith. Troy is one of England’s leading Head Gardeners, working in some of the best gardens.  At present he is working as Head Gardener at Iford Manor Garden, where he started in 2019 and prior to that, he was Head Gardener at Sissinghurst Castle Garden in Kent for seven years.. He started his career in Bodnant Gardens in North Wales and spent some time in the Courts Garden. Troy’s approach is informed by his appreciation of the artistic merits of garden-making with his love and fascination of nature.
Sissinghurst Castle Gardens in Kent was created by Vita Sackville West and her husband Harold Nicolson (1930 – 1968), who were inspired by the by the naturalistic, cottage garden style, which developed at the start of the 1900s. It is a beautiful garden in a very scenic setting.
